Ingredients
- 2 & 3/4 cup (344 grams) all-purpose flour or bread flour
- 1 tbsp dry active yeast
- 1/2 cup water warmed to 100°F-115°F
- 2 tbsp sugar cane sugar, maple syrup, or honey
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/3 cup milk warmed to 100°F-115°F
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter melted
- 1 large egg
- sesame seeds optional
For the Egg Wash
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp water
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. If using a stand mixer, you can do this step directly in the stand mixer bowl with the dough hook attached.
- Add the flour, sugar, salt, warm milk, melted butter, and egg to the bowl and mix together until a dough begins to form.
- If using a stand mixer, put the mixer on medium to knead for about 5-7 minutes. If not using a mixer, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
- Place the dough balls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Leaving a little space between each bun. Cover them with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and make your egg wash by beating together 1 large egg with 1 tbsp water. Brush the tops of the buns with egg wash. Add sesame seeds if desired.
- Bake the buns in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until they turn golden brown.
- Remove from the oven, allow the buns to cool, and enjoy!
Notes
Store homemade hamburger buns in an airtight container or bag at room temperature for up to 3-5 days. For longer storage, freeze the buns in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 2-3 months. Thaw buns at room temperature. I recommend toasting the buns to freshen them up before serving if they were previously frozen.
